Francis Bacon- Three studies for crucifixion

One of my favourite artists at the moment is Francis Bacon, I find his 1944&1965 crucifixion pieces both vibrant and spine chilling and I adore his use of colour and the way that he paints such distressing scenes of death that appear to be so full of life at the same time. I have always been interested in dark, unconventional art work so it is obvious that Francis Bacon and his work appeals to me and these pieces are my favourite. Bacon told David Sylvester, "I've always been very moved by pictures of slaughterhouses and meat... there have been extraordinary photographs which have been done of animals just being taken up before they where slaughtered; and the smell of death" It seems as if animals know what is going to happen to them, attempting escape... I believe Bacon did the same type of thing in his pieces, they remind me of animals, or more so souls, trying to escape the body. François Boucher 1752: Marie-Louise O'Murphy

I really enjoyed learning about this oil on canvas painting in my history of art lecture the other day, not so much due to the artwork, due to the story behind the piece. Marie-Louise was one of Louis VX lower mistresses, and at the age of only fourteen, this was painted. I think the main reason I was drawn to this image was that it is technically just old pornography and the king used to open his wardrobe and pleasure himself to this image. It amazes me how much times have changed and how easily available anything can be if you look on the internet. I love the use of colour in this portrait, all of the rich fabrics and textures too- you can clearly see that this room belonged to somebody rich- and indeed it did.

Today I went to the Walker Art Gallery in attempt to get some inspiration to do some drawings, I would have liked to go to the Tate Gallery but as a newbie here I really didn't want to get lost. I did enjoy looking at all of the old sculptures and renaissance art work but it really isn't my style at all- I prefer much more contemporary work. Regardless, here is one that really interested me! Now, if anybody knows me they know, I love goats. This marble sculpture of a goat fascinated me because it is so life-like. Considering this sculpture has been done hundreds of years ago the detail is absolutely amazing- It really brings the Goat to life. It did not inspire my work but it is something that really caught my eye so I thought I would add.
