Wuon-Gean Ho

Wuon-Gean Ho was a visiting lecturer who came in to speak to us about their work and inspirations.

Ho is a British-Chinese artist who specialises in printmaking who has had international exhibitions and for over 25 years has been fascinated by fantastical dreams and love-able beasts.

I really loved one piece that she decided to show us in the lecture; Dancing Dresses -2011.
the prints were shown in an animation so that the little dresses really did dance and I thought that it was so simple, yet so beautifully done. I really enjoyed watching these little monochrome dresses flow on the screen, it made me really want to try and work with a little bit less colour, I found that by doing this it really made me focus on the movement and the details a lot more, it was almost as if you could actually feel the wind in the air as the dresses floated in the wind.

This piece made me really want to focus on my black and white work so I decided to draw Light Yagami from deathnote to see if using limited colours affects the way you view my art. I think that this really worked because it made the image appear more cynical than it would have if i chose to use a lot of colour and pencils like usual, I decided to use watercolour pencils for this and to keep the apple red- this emphasises the apple and I feel it kind of adds a sort of movement to the picture. In the series, the God of death really loves apples, by choosing to keep the apple red instead of monochrome like the rest- I feel it makes the apple more important too!
